The Woodstock Opera House was built in 1889 as a City Hall to house city offices, police and fire departments, a public library, and the Opera House, thus becoming a central gathering place for all. Plans were drawn up and the building was completed for the total cost of $26,000.
Since that time, there have been, of course, repairs and renovations to maintain this historic building. In the mid-1970’s, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fundraising was undertaken and with $500,000 raised, there was an extensive restoration, and it was reopened as the Woodstock Opera House Community Center in February 1977.
Just recently, a grant was received from the Department of Economic Opportunity, “Rebuild Downtowns and Main Street Grant Program”. This will allow for another revitalization of the building which is scheduled to be completed by September 30, 2024.
It doesn’t stop there. This is the “Jewel” of the Woodstock Square, bringing tourists into the City to view the Opera House and to visit the shops and dine at restaurants. The Opera House brings over $2 million into the city annually and generates 50 plus jobs.
By being a SPONSOR, you can help provide the funds to maintain this vital historical building and provide quality programing for all, ensuring the Opera House’s presence for generations to come (Friends of the Opera House is a 501(c) (3) organization)
